Until death or when they resign.
What does the monarch do?
Rep. Canada’s official head of state and commander.
How was the Governor General chosen? How long do they keep this position for?
Appointed by the monarch but recommended by the prime minister. 5 yrs
What does the Governor General do?
- Represented the British government and monarch
- Now only rep. Monarch
- act as unifying symbol who speaks for all Canadians
- Makes public appearances, sign bills passed by parliament
How was the prime minister chosen?
Usually leader of political party who won most seats in House of Common.
How long does the Prime Minister keep its position?
Until he/she loses the election.
What does the Prime Minister do?
- Canada’s head of government
- Controls his/her party, speaks for gov’ in power
Chooses members of the cabinet
How was the cabinet minister chosen?
By the prime minister.
How long does the Cabinet Minister keep its position?
Until he/she loses the election.
What does the Cabinet Minister do?
- Department ministers run 1/more governments.
- Ministers with special responsibilities in parliament
- Ministers without portfolio who don’t run specific department, but is appointed to cabinet ensures it includes members from all regions of Canada
How was the member of parliament chosen?
Elected by citizens.
How long can the member of parliament run for?
No time limit.
What does the Member of Parliament do?
- Each rep. Geographical area of country
- Responsible for running parts of government
- Carries out gov. Policies within a field of gov.
How was the senator chosen?
Appointed by prime minister.
