What do we mean by the term ROLE?
Roles are the part or position played by a certain person in a team orientation.
What do we mean by the term RESPONSIBILITY?
Responsibilities are the actions or tasks that one person does that are expected to be done based on their role.
What are the main responsibilities of a Pharmacy Assistant?
- Maintenance of stock and keeping safe storage conditions
- Preparing the prescription (assembly process) except for the final accuracy check
- Selling over the counter prescriptions (GSL medicines)
- Reception/counter duties
- Providing information or counsel to patients based on your limitations (knowledge and skills)
What are the legal duties of a Pharmacy Assistant?
- Adhere to GDPR guidelines and SOPs
- Escalating to senior members of staff any issues that are above my scope of limitations
What are the main responsibilities of a Pharmacy Technician?
- Preparing aseptic products
- Supervision and training of newer pharmacy staff
- Final accuracy checks
- Performing medicine reconciliation (history) of patients
- All responsibilities done by Pharmacy assistants
What are the legal duties of a Pharmacy Technician?
- Maintain registry in the GPhC
- Adhering to GDPR guidelines and SOPs
- Adhering to control drug SOPs
What are the main responsibilities of a Pharmacist?
- Doing clinical checks
- Supervision of all staff in the pharmacy
- Administering immunisations
- Offering information to other healthcare professionals about safe and secure maintenance of medicines
- All responsibilities done by both Pharmacy technicians and assistants
What are the legal duties of a Pharmacist?
- Maintain registry in the GPhC
- Adhering to GDPR guidelines and SOPs
- Adhering to control drug SOPs
- Reviewing SOPs, risk assessments
What does ‘working within the limits of your role’ mean?
It means completing the responsibilities I have within my own competencies and capabilities based on my knowledge and skills.
Why is it necessary to have limitations within roles?
To allow clear distinction on job responsibilities and to know who to refer to when specific tasks are outside our scope of limitations.
What is the role of the Responsible Pharmacist?
The pharmacist in charge of the pharmacy during that period, responsible for ensuring the pharmacy operates up to GPhC standards.
What is the ‘Pharmacy Record’?
A legal document that keeps track of who the responsible pharmacist is at any given day and time.
How long can a Responsible Pharmacist be absent from the Pharmacy in any 24-hour period?
Not for more than two hours in a 24-hour period.
Can a Pharmacy operate without a responsible pharmacist?
No, all tasks such as selling P medicines or handing out prescriptions need to be halted until the responsible pharmacist is back on the premises.
What are the rules about handing out medicines if the Responsible Pharmacist is not physically on the premises?
Staff members are not allowed to hand out or sell medicines or prescriptions unless there is a second pharmacist present.
