Role of the father Flashcards
What was Schaffer and Emerson’s procedure?
It was a longitudinal study from ruth to 18 months about attachment to fathers from infants
What were Schaffer and Emerson’s findings?
3% of babies attached to their father first but 27% of babies attach to both parents at the same time (7 months). However, by 18 months, 75% of babies formed an attachment with their father
What were Grossmann et al.’s findings?
Fathers have a different role from mothers (play and stimulation rather than emotional development) and attachment to father seems less important for teenage relationships than with mothers
What was Field’s procedure?
Filing of 4 month old babies with primary caregiver fathers, primary mothers and secondary fathers
What were Field’s findings?
Primary caregiver fathers spent more time smiling, holding and imitating infants than secondary and fathers can adopt a emotional role when they are primary as primary attachment has emotional significance
What did Schaffer and Emerson investigate?
Attachment to fathers
What did Grossmann et al. investigate?
The distinctive role for fathers
What did Field investigate?
Fathers as primary attachment figures
