Role Of The Father Flashcards
What are the three AO3 points to evaluate the role of the father?
- fields research - prac apps advice
- RTC Grossmans research - female only families
- alternative exp - biological basis
P
(prac apps)
Fields research - prac apps
E
this is coz principles of Fields research into role of the father found that responsiveness to infants needs is most important when forming att rather than gender, this can be used to advise parents in rl, e.g. fathers can become primary att figure
E
- Parents may feel anxious making decisions about who should take on primary cg role as mothers may feel stereotypical pressure to stay at home.
- Equally, fathers may feel stereotypical pressure to go to work rather than focus on parenting.
- This may not be the best option economically for some families as the mother may earn more.
L
Therefore research into role of the father i.a.i.p.o.a.p as it can reduce parental anx about roles of fathers
P
(RTC Grossman)
However a potential criticism is that theres research to contradict Grossmans research into role of the father in att and his findings that fathers as secondary att figures had an important role in child’s development of play and stimulation
E
This is because other studies have shown children growing up in single mother or lesbian parent families have developed the same as two parent heterosexual families
E
- This suggests the fathers role of play and stimulation may not be solely related to gender of att figure
- However it could be argued single mother or lesbian parent families simply adapt to accommodate role played by fathers, so a father doesnt necessarily have to be present.
L
Therefore limiting the extent Grossmans research can be used to explain the role of the fathers in all families.
P
(alt exp - biological basis)
Alternatively, it is argued there may be a biological basis to support Grossmans findings that fathers adopt a secondary cg role
E
This is bc it could be that female hormones such as oestrogen create higher levels of nurturing and therefore women are biologically predisposed to be the primary att figure.
E
Whereas males produce more testosterone which is not ass with caring and nurturing suggesting fathers role is less important than mother as Grossman suggested.
L
Therefore there are several exp to consider when investigating the role of the father
