Role of Microorganisms in Disease Flashcards
Different types of microorganisms
Bacteria, viruses, protozoans, fungi, animals
What are parasites?
Lives in a host; get its sustenance from host. Considered as a pathogen
What kind of organism is a bacteria?
Unicellular organisms
Are bacteria eukaryotes or prokaryotes
Prokaryotes–lacks a nucleus
What are viruses
Non-cellular entities
What do viruses consist of
nucleic acid core surrounded by a protein coat
Examples of diseases caused by viruses
influenza, mumps, HIV, COVID
example of diseases that are caused by bacteria
Tuberculosis, meningitis, food poisoning
What are fungi
obtains nutrients by absorbing organic matter from environment
Are fungi eukaryotes or prokaryotes
Eurkaryotes
Example of disease caused by fungi
Asthma, athlete’s foot, ringworm
Disease
condition that deteriorates the normal functioning of cells, tissue, organs
What are the two types of diseases
Infectious and noninfectious
What is infectious disease
can spread one person to another; caused by pathogenic microbes
Noninfectious disease
Does not spread; it remains in the person who has contracted them. Not caused by pathogens
