Who was Feargus O’Connor?
Created the National Charter Association in 1840 which revived the movement after failure of 1st petition.
What did O’Connor create to get across the Chartist aims?
The Northern Star. It sold 36,000 copies weekly.
Was O’Connor influential?
Offered charismatic leadership which attracted working class support. Served as an MP in 1847 which gave him influence.
What were some of the negative attributes of O’Connor?
He was divisive, argued with other Chartists leaders and criticised them. His rhetoric was of action and violence.
Who was William Lovett?
Founding member of the London Working Men’s Association and was key to authorising the six-point charter.
What were Lovett’s values/focuses?
Strongly pro-peace (opposed O’Connor). Tried to unite working-class with middle-class by working with the Birmingham-based Universal Suffrage Association.
