Why was there a big divide between the North and the South?
In the South, not as many people were unhappy with the poor law or the workhouses, whereas in the North it was a bigger concern.
How did radicalism vary between the North and South?
In the South, support was moderate while in the North, they were willing to use violence and in some areas they formed local militia
How did support for Chartism vary between the North and South?
The South had more rural workers who were less likely to support the Chartists, whereas the North had a higher proportion of industrial workers
How far was Birmingham in support of Chartism?
Early on, supported Chartism, had the Birmingham Political Union etc. However, more moderate so support waned when violence was involved
How far did the Middle-class support Chartism?
At the start there was good support but following the Birmingham riots and Newport Uprising, support evaporated

After, 1840, Chartist movement was very middle-class in character.

Poor Law amendment Act benefitted them so had limited support for Chartism
How far did women support Chartism?
Significant source of support. 20% of signatures in the 3 petitions were by women. Women’s divisions in local Chartist groups and they were crucial for fundraising.
