What is HSE
the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is a government agency that helps prevent work related death, injury and ill health.
What does the HSE do?
Provide advice, information an guidance
raise awareness in workplaces by influencing and engaging
Operate permissioning and licensing activities in major hazard industries.
Carries out targeted inspections and investigations
Take enforcement action to prevent harm and hold those who break the law to account.
What does an HSE inspector do?
inspect sectors which have the most serious risks.
where they have information that health and safety is a significant concern such as:
from previous performance
concerns raised by workers, the public or others
incident investigation
Report of injuries, diseases and dangerous occurrences
What does the inspector do when they inspect
- Speak to relevant people e.g. managers, supervisors, workers and employee representative
-observe a sample of workplace activities, conditions and practices
-Assess relevant documents, if necessary
-Check whether risk controls are effective
-identify any breaches of the law
-Consider appropriate enforcement (enforce the law when its not being followed).
