Role of Hormones in Regulation of Sex Characteritics Flashcards
(6 cards)
What are the different triggers for Sex Characteristics?
Genetics
Hormones
When does puberty begin in females?
Between the ages of 9-13
What triggers the start of puberty? (F)
When the Hypothalamus increases production of Gonadotropic releasing hormone (GnRH)
GnRH acts on the anterior pituitary to produce LH (it triggers ovulation & the development of the Corpus Luteum) and FH
(Stimulates the growth of ovarian follicles)
The Corpus Luteum is a temporary hormone-secreting structure that develops in an ovary after an ovum has been
discharged but degenerates after a few days unless pregnancy has begun
After ovulation, estrogen & progesterone inhibit the pituitary & the HP gland
What do LH & FSH do? (F)
They act on the ovaries to produce FSHs Estrogen & Progesterone
E&P produce the secondary sex characteristics & launches the rep. cycle (ends a menopause)
After ovulation, estrogen & progesterone inhibit the pituitary & the HP gland
When does puberty begin in males?
Between the ages of 10-13
What triggers the start of puberty? (M)
When the HP increases the production of GnRH
GnRH also acts on the AP to produce LH & FSH in males
FSH stimulates sperm prod. In the STs
LH stimulates testos. prod. in the Interstitial cells
Produces secondary sex characteristics & launches the rep. cycle
