progressive
o Meeting the needs of employees will meet the result of achieving the goals of the business
importance of HRM
business success is linked to the people in the business
- Staffing or human resources are a significant cost on the business
- The growth of the tertiary (and quaternary and quinary industries) that rely on trained and motivated staff
- The continual quest for gains in productivity and efficiency
- The changing perception of work (more than just a job)
Although staffing accounts for around 60% of businesses costs, effective HR managers will adopt the strategic view that staff are assets that add value to the business rather than as costs that need to be reduced
Businesses with effective practices manage
change more effectively, and this enhances their ability to gain a more sustainable competitive advantage
Strategic challenges of HRM
The challenges of developing and retaining trained staff within a business (loyalty is a rare commodity)
Improving leadership development (brain drain and/or growing overseas for CEOs)
Managing the ageing workforce (keep them for longer)
Succession planning (big businesses founders/leaders are retiring! Who takes over?)
