Rodgers FMA Flashcards
what is FMA
- what is the purpose of it
muscle fatigue assessment
- identify tasks that lead to the most fatigue accumulation, as fatigued muscles increase the potential for injuries
what was the FMA originally designed for?
assess automobile assembly lines and fabrication tasks
The MFA is best designed to assess production tasks having ______ repetitions/minute
<12-15
2 limitations of the FMA
- The MFA will underestimate the fatigue accumulation in sustained postural tasks (>30 repetitions/minute) as there is not enough time for full relaxation of the muscles between efforts
- the MFA will underestimate fatigue accumulation in tasks postural loads are sustained for longer than 30s
the MFA is most effective when used to assess ?
all muscle groups for each task
muscle groups more vulnerable to fatigue accumulation involve _____________, _______________, or ________________, as opposed to short bursts of heavy loading
- light loading
- long holding times
- high reps
what do you do after changes have been made to improve the task?
reassess all muscle groups in order to ensure that the stress of the task hasnt simply been shifted to another area
what 3 things do you consider when determining what type of job would benefit from undergoing MFA
- jobs with high incidence of injuries or complaints
- difficulty finding people who can do or willing to do the job
- bad rep among workers or supervisors
Once problematic jobs have been determined, choosing which tasks need further assessment can be determined through the following (2)
- Choose tasks that workers/supervisors rate as difficult, of long duration, high frequency
- Review incident/accident reports, choosing tasks that are most frequently associated with problems
what do you do before analyzing the task in question ?
acquire a minimum of 5 min video of unedited footage
the footage is use to determine the intensity, frequency and duration od task
what 3 values combined generate the 3 # rating which in turn corresponds to a priority for change score
intensity, duration, frequency
what do workers use to rate the intensity of efforts ?
- if 25% of ppl cant do the task what does this mean?
- borg scale rate of perceived exertion
- the effort level required for task is too high and a borg rating of 4
how do you assess duration of the task
a stopwatch is used to the time the duration of continuous effort at a given intensity prior to a change in intensity or relaxation
- this is done for each body part at each given intensity
what does the borg scale look like for rating duration
1 - <6s
2 - 6-20s
3 - 20-30 s
4 - >30 s (priority)
what does the borg scale look like for assessing intensity
1 - light
2 - moderate
3- heavy
4- <75% of all workers can exert effort
