rod and cone cells Flashcards
What must happens for a generator potential to be created in rode cells?
pigment of rod cells must be broken down by light energy. there is enough energy for low intensity light to cause the breakdown
what has to happen for threshold to be met in bipolar cell?
enough pigment must be broken down
why can threshold be reached in low light for rod cells?
so many rod cells are connected to singular bipolar cell. this is an example of summation.
what are the effects of retinal convergence/many rod cells connecting to one bipolar cell?
brain cannot distinguish between separate sources of light.
two light sources close together cannot be seen as separate- rod cells give low visual acuity
why are action potentials only generated with enough light in cone cells?
iodopsin is only broken down if there is high light intensity
why do cone cells have high visual acuity?
one cone cell connected to bipolar cell. no spatial summation. cone cells only respond to high light intensity. the brain is able to distinguish between separate sources of light detected. come cells have high visual acuity
which part of the eye receives the highest light intensity
the fovea
where are cone cells located and why?
fovea
bc it receives highest light intensity. night light intensity is needs for threshold value to be met for cone cells
where are rod cells located? why?
far away from fovea as they respond to low light intensities
