Rocks + Minerals (Chapter 9) Flashcards
Lithosphere
The outer layer of the Earth including the crust.
Minerals
A solid, non organic substance.
Magma
Hot fluid below the earth’s crust where lava is formed.
Sediments
Matter that sits at the bottom of a liquid.
Native Elements
Elements that are natural
Crystal
A solid substance made from molecules
Lustre
A mineral that reflects light
Igneous rocks
Rocks that are formed from cool lava and magma
Extrusive rocks
Igneous rocks that are cooled when above the Earth’s crust
Viscosity
.
Streak
The colour of a mineral
Hardness
Solid and it’s not easily broken
Lustre
The way a mineral reflects in the light
Pumice
A light and prous volcanic rock when lava cools quickly.
Scoria
An igneous rock that is formed when lava cools quickly.
Abrasive
A substance that will scratch another substance quite easily.
Obsidian
A hard, dark rock that is formed when lava cools quickly, it’s glasslike.
Intrusive rocks
Igneous rocks that are created when magma cools in the mantle
Batholiths
An intrusive rock that is greater than 100kms wide
Granite
An igneous rock that has different coloured rocks inside of it.
Basalt
A dark, fine-grained rock with crystals which is formed when lava cools.
Sedimentary rocks
Rocks that are formed from sediments
Erosion
Destruction caused by weathering
Floodplains
Land near rivers that contain sediments
Glaciers
Blocks of ice
Moraines
Deposits from moving glaciers
Sandstone
Sedimentary rocks with sand-grains
Mudstone
Sedimentary rock that is fine-grained
