Rocks/Fold Mountains Flashcards
List 3 different Rock types
Sedimentary
Igneous
Metamorphic
Name one sedimentary rock one igneous and one metamorphic.
Metamorphic- Marble or quartzite
Sedimentary- sandstone /Limestone
Igneous- Granite or Basalt
Name one Example of a rock that forms when molten rock cools.
Granite or basalt
Name two ways Rocks can be use for economic (Money) use to people.
Rocks can be used for Hellene and Monuments.
How do fold mountains form.
Fold mountains are formed by two colliding tectonic plates pushing against each other.
Name 3 periods of Fold mountain.
1.Caledonian 400 million years ago.In Ireland the Dublin-Wicklow mountains were formed during this period.
2.Armorican Folding 250 million years ago. Many Munster folding mountains were formed during this time , for example Ma gillyvuddy reeks in Kerry and the Galter mountains in Tipperary.
- Alpine folding started in 35 million years ago and is still ongoing today. These are the youngest and highest fold mountain’s in the world.( because they haven’t been worn down by weathering ).They include the Rockies in America, the Himalayas in Asia and the Alps in Europe.
How does igneous form.
Igneous Rock is formed by magma found in the mantle just below the crust.
How does sedimentary Rock form.
Sedimentary Rocks are formed of other rocks and the remains of dead plants and animals.
How does Metamorphic Rock form?
When igneous or sedimentary Rock come into contact with great heat (from magma) or great pressure ( due to folding )), they can be changed into completely new rocks known as Metamorphic rocks.
