Earthquake’s Flashcards
What is a Seismograph used for?
A Seismograph is an instrument used for measuring and recording how long an earthquake lasted.
What is a Richter scale?
A Richter scale is an instrument used to measure the magnitude (strength) of an earthquake. It goes from 1-8. each unit it goes up means it’s ten times powerful than it was at its previous unit.
What is moment magnitude scale ?
A moment magnitude scale {MMS) is an instrument used to measure the light in the chewed of an earthquake it is a replacement to the Richter scale because it is more reliables. It goes from 1 to 10.
- What causes an Earthquakes ?
Earthquakes are caused by large plates colliding and skidding past each other but when they touch they often lock eventually one plate will slip or break or jump forward ausing an earthquake,.
- What does Seismologists?
Seismologists are scientists who study earthquakes. They use specialised equipment to measure activity in earthquake zones.
In your opinion state why Seismologists are important?
Seismologists are important because they can predict (estimate) when and where an earthquake may occur.
- what is the focus?
The focus is a place where an earthquake begins beneath the earth’s surface.
what are shock waves?
Schlock waves are circles that spread out from the focus.
. What is an Epicentre?
An epicentre is The point at the earth’s surface that is directly above the focus of the earthquake. The strength of the earthquake is greatest here.
. What is a fault?
A fault is a large crack in the earth’s surface.
. Where is the San Andreas fault?
The San Andreas fault is in California and it marks a plate boundary.
How are tsunamis caused?
Tsunamis are caused when an earthquake occurs under the sea .
. When did the earthquake in Nepal occur?
The Nepal earthquake occurred on April the 25th of 2015
How many km from Kathmandu was the earthquake ?
The earthquake was 80km from Kathmandu.
- How many people died and were left injured in the Nepal earthquake ?
9,000 people died and 17,000 were injured.
