Rocks and Resources Flashcards
What are the 3 types of rocks?
Sedimentary rock
Metamorphic rock
Igneous rock
What is sedimentary rock? Give examples.
Sedimentary rock is when fragments are combined through being compressed, cemented together and hardened.
EX: Sandstone, shale, Limestone
What is metamorphic rock? Give examples.
Metamorphic rock is when form is changed due to tremendous pressure, extreme heat, and chemical processes.
EX: Gnesis and Slate
What is Igneous rock? Give examples.
Igneous rock is formed when magma cools and hardens. On earth’s surface it is called lava.
EX: Granite, Pumice, Obsidian
Define nonrenewable energy.
Energy that exists in limited amounts and cannot be replaced quickly.
What are two types of nonrenewable energy?
Natural gas and Oil
Describe Natural Gas.
Natural gas is formed from plants, animals, and microorganisms that lived millions of years ago.
Describe Oil.
Oil is formed from old marine animals.
Define Fossil Fuels.
Stored energy originally obtained from sunlight by plants and animals that lived millions of years ago.
Name 3 fossil fuels.
Coal
Petroleum
Natural Gas
Describe Coal.
Coal is a solid rock that forms when heat and pressure transform plant material over millions of years- carbonization
Describe Petroleum.
Oil that is a thick and black- liquid hydrocarbon.
Describe the characteristics of an oil/gas reserve.
Oil/gas accumulates between a layer of a permeable rock and a non-permeable rock.
Name and describe nuclear energy.
Nuclear energy uses the energy of the nuclei of heavy atoms to generate electricity.
Define renewable resources.
Resources that can be replaced at the same rate that they are used.
