Rocks and Minerals Flashcards
Mineral
a naturally formed, inorganic solid that has a definiate
rock
the solid mineral material forming part of the surface of the earth and other similar planets, exposed on the surface or underlying the soil or oceans.
element
a part or aspect of something abstract, especially one that is essential or characteristic.
compound
a thing that is composed of two or more separate elements; a mixture.
crystal
a piece of a homogeneous solid substance having a natural geometrically regular form with symmetrically arranged plane faces.
color
the property possessed by an object of producing different sensations on the eye as a result of the way the object reflects or emits light.
luster
a gentle sheen or soft glow, especially that of a partly reflective surface.
streak
The colour of a mineral when powdered and observed against an unglazed white porcelain plate.
cleavage
The tendency of a mineral to break along flat planar surfaces as determined by the structure of its crystal lattice
fracture
any kind of separation or break in a rock formation.
density
as the mass of a substance per unit volume
ore
A large deposit of mineral that is able to be mined
metallic
Shiny
non metallic
not shiny
gemstone
precious or semiprecious stone, especially when cut and polished or engraved
igneous rock
formed through the cooling and solidification of magma or lava
Sedimentary rock
formed by the deposition and subsequent cementation of that material at the Earth’s surface and within bodies of water
Metamorphic rock
when rocks subjected to very high heat and pressure, which cause obvious physical and/or chemical change
