Rocks and Minerals Flashcards
Mineral?
Is a naturally occuring, usually inorganic solid that has a definite crystalline structure and chemical compound.
How are minerals formed?
By Metamorphism, As magma and Lava Cool, and From Solutions
How are Minerals Classified?
By Silicate and Nonsilicate Minerals
What is Streak?
Streak is the color of the powdered form of a mineral.
What is Luster?
Luster is the way a surface reflects light
What is a cleavage?
The tendency of a mineral to split along specific planes of weakness to form smooth, flat surfaces
What is a Fracture?
Is when something breaks unevenly
What is an Uplift?
Uplift is the rising of regions of the crust to higher elevations
What is a Subsidence?
It is a sinking of regions of the crust to lower elevation
What is a Rift Zone?
Is an area where a set of deep cracks form and sometimes magma can rise up.
What can you do to find the density?
Divide mass by volume
What are the 5 things something needs to be to be a mineral?
Inorganic Naturally occurring Solid Crystalline structure Definite chemical composition
