Rocks And Building Materials Flashcards
How do you make concrete?
Mix cement, sand, aggregate and water together.
What chemical is limestone mainly made of?
Calcium carbonate, CaCO3
When heated strongly, what does calcium carbonate do?
It decomposes to make calcium oxide and carbon dioxide. (Thermal decomposition)
How do metal carbonates react in a similar way?
They are heated or reacted with acids
Calcium hydroxide solution is called ……… ?
Limewater
What is lime water used for and how does it show it?
To test for Carbon dioxide. The limewater turns because it reacts with carbon dioxide to produce insoluble calcium carbonate.
What happens when water is added to calcium oxide?
They react and produce Calcium Hydroxide.
What is calcium hydroxide?
It is an alkali therefore it can be used to neutralise acids.
How is cement made?
By heating limestone and clay in a kiln
How is mortar made?
By mixing cement, sand and water together. (Mortar holds bricks of buildings together)
Why do we depend on limestone?
It is useful for many things, cosmetics, toothpaste, bread and building materials.
What is thermal deposition?
When a substance is broken down using heat.
What is limestone?
Limestone is a sedimentary rock.
