Rocks Flashcards
what are the 3 rock families
igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic
describe igneous rocks
formed from a hot liquid that cooled down and solidified. Example: granite, besalt, obsidian, andesite, gabbro
describe sedimentary rocks
formed from broken pieces of other rocks that were transported, deposited and compacted. Example: sandstone, shale, breccia, conglomerate, limestone
describe metamorphic rocks
formed when pre-existing rock changes forms because of high heat and pressure. Example: slate, schist, gness
describe the rock cycle
a slow, ongoing process of forming rocks.
what are the types of weathering?
mechanical, chemical, biological
what is mechanical weathering
physically breaking down rocks into smaller bits
ex: sandblasting rocks with sand
what is chemical weathering
chemically attacking the rock to dissolve/corrode it
ex: calcite/limestone in acid rain
what is biological weathering
when living things contribute to breaking down rocks
ex: tree roots cracking a building’s foundation
