Rocks Flashcards
How is a valley form
A valley formed by flowing water, or river valley, is usually V-shaped. The exact shape will depend on the characteristics of the stream flowing through it. Rivers with steep gradients, as in mountain ranges, produce steep walls and a bottom.
How are water falls form
Waterfalls often form in the upper stages of a river where it flows over different bands of rock. It erodes soft rock more quickly than hard rock and this may lead to the creation of a waterfall. Formation of a waterfall: The soft rock erodes more quickly, undercutting the hard rock.
Afforestation
Afforestation is the establishment of a forest or stand of trees (forestation) in an area where there was no previous tree cover.
What is glacial erosion?
The first that we will talk about is plucking, which is defined as the erosion and transport of large chunks of rocks. As a glacier moves over the landscape, water melts below the glacier and seeps into cracks within the underlying bedrock.
What are the main types of rocks in the uk
Igneous Rocks. Basalt. Gabbro. Granite. Obsidian. Volcanic Ash and Tuff.
Sedimentary Rocks. Clays, Mudstones and Shales. Limestones. Sandstone.
Metamorphic Rocks. Gneiss. Marble. Quartzite. Schist. Slate.
Where does the chalk come from
The Needles, situated off the Isle of Wight, are part of the extensive Southern England Chalk Formation. Chalk is a soft, white, porous, sedimentary carbonate rock,
Igneous rocks?
Extrusive igneous rocks cool and solidify quicker than intrusive igneous rocks. They are formed by the cooling of molten magma on the earth’s surface.
Metamorphic rocks ?
A metamorphic rock is a result of a transformation of a pre-existing rock. The original rock is subjected to very high heat and pressure, which cause obvious physical and/or chemical changes.
Sedimentary rocks?
Sedimentary rocks are types of rock that are formed by the deposition and subsequent cementation of that material at the Earth’s surface and within bodies of water.
Were does granite come from?
Granite forms from the slow crystallization of magma below Earth’s surface.
Types of sedimentary rock.
Clastic sedimentary rocks such as breccia, conglomerate, sandstone, siltstone, and shale are formed from mechanical weathering debris
Types of igneous rocks.
These rocks include andesite, basalt, obsidian, pumice, rhyolite, scoria, and tuff
Types of metamorphic rock .
There are two basic types of metamorphic rocks. Foliated metamorphic rocks such as gneiss, phyllite, schist, and slate have a layered or banded appearance that is produced by exposure to heat and directed pressure.
