Q

What is Hydraulic Action?

A

Hydraulic Action is the force of water against rock’s surface and can cause air to be trapped in cracks. The pressure weakens the rock and gradually wears it away.

Q

What is Biological Weathering?

A

Biological Weathering is when burrowing animals such as rabbits can burrow into a crack in a rock, making it bigger and splitting the rock. Plant roots can grow in cracks, opening the cracks in the rocks.

Q

What is Chemical Weathering?

A

Chemical Weathering is when carbon dioxide dissolves itself in rain making it slightly acidic. Minerals in rocks may react with the rainwater, causing the rock to be weathered.

Q

What is Mechanical/Physical Weathering?

A

Mechanical/Physical Weathering is when water gets into rocks and freezes;it expands and opens the rock and pushes the rock further apart. When the ice melts, water gets further into the crack. The process repeats. This is called freeze-thaw weathering.
