Rocks Flashcards
Rocks:
Are a naturally formed solid that is usually made up of two or more minerals
The Rock Cycle:
The way rock changes in a set of Natural Processes that Form, Change, Breakdown, and Reform
Igneous Rock:
a rock that forms as molten rock cools and becomes solid
Sedimentary Rock:
Is formed when pieces of older rocks, plants, and loose materials get pressed or cemented together
Metamorphic Rock:
Is formed when heat or pressure cause older rocks to change into new types of rocks
Extrusive Igneous:
When lava cools outside Earth’s surface (Obsidian)
Intrusive Igneous:
When magma cools inside Earths Surface (Granite)
Volcanic Glass:
is a rock that forms when lava cools to rapidly for crystals to form
The crystals that form quickly cooling lava will create (small fine grained or large well defined) mineral grains
Small fine grained
Light colored igneous rocks contain (higher or lower) levels of silica
Higher
Sedimentary rocks are changed to sediments by:
Weathering and erosion
The rock cycle can change the sedimentary rock limestone into the metamorphic rock marble through a process called
Metamorphism
Bio chemical sedimentary rocks form from:
The remains of once living things
Chemical sedimentary rocks form:
When minerals crystallize directly from the water
Clastic Sedimentary are made up of:
Broken pieces of minerals and rock fragments
Clast:
The broken pieces of rock fragments in a sedimentary rock
Metamorphic rock that contains parallel layers of flat and elongated minerals
Foliated Rock
Metamorphic rock that has mineral grains with a random interlocking texture
Nonfoliated Rock
Regional Metamorphism:
Results in high temperatures and pressure that effects large areas of Earth’s surface
Magma comes in contact with existing rock
Contact metamorphism
Fragments that make up rock
Grains
Molten rock that erupts on Earth’s surface
Lava
Molten or liquid rock underground
Magma
Rock material that is broken down into smaller pieces or dissolved in water as rocks erode
