Rocks Flashcards
How do igneous rocks become sedimentary rocks?
Weather and erode into sediments, then compacted AND CEMENTED
How do sedimentary rocks become metamorphic rocks?
Heat and Pressure, contact with magma
How do metamorphic rocks become igneous rocks?
Melting, lava or magma and cooling and crystallization
What type of rock is SANDSTONE? What are some of its characteristics?
Sedimentary rock: sand sized fragments and horizontal layers
What type of rock is PUMICE? What are some of its characteristics?
Igneous rock: fine grained, porous and floats in water. Very light
What type of rock is LIMESTONE? What are some of its characteristics?
Sedimentary rock: bubbles with acid and can be crystalline. Cave rocks.
What type of rock is MARBLE? What are some of its characteristics?
Metamorphic: Uniform color, sparkling crystals. Bubbles when acid is applied. White or off white color
What type of rock is SILTSTONE? What are some of its characteristics?
Sedimentary: ripples, may contain fossils (fossils will be black on test)
What type of rock is PHYLLITE? What are some of its characteristics?
Metamorphic: darker color, lookes like a regular/ basic rock
What type of rock is CONGLOMERATE? What are some of its characteristics?
Sedimentary: contains large fragments, horizontal layers
What type of rock is BASALT? What are some of its characteristics?
Igneous: porous, heavier than pumice
What type of rock is RHYOLITE? What are some of its characteristics?
Igneous: fine grained, mostly light minerals. black crystal specks
What type of rock is SHALE? What are some of its characteristics?
Sedimentary: clay(very small) fragments, horizontal layers
What type of rock is COAL? What are some of its characteristics?
Sedimentary: light and black
What determines the texture of a rock?
The size, shape and arrangement of the mineral grains
