Rocks Flashcards
What are the three types of rocks?
Sedimentary
Metamorphic
Igneous
Can all rocks turn into each other?
True or False?
True
What is the definition of a rock?
Rocks are nonliving natural pieces of solid matter that contain one or more minerals. Rocks are naturally found objects that are not altered by human process. Rocks can be any size as long as it is a solid piece of matter containing minerals.
How are igneous rocks formed?
Igneous rocks are formed by the cooled or hardening of magma and lava. There are two types of ways that igneous rocks are formed.
The first is creating intrusive rocks. These are rocks are formed in the earth. They are large crystals and are coarse-grained such as granite. This cooled magma is then push to the surface of the volcano and becomes an igneous rock.
The Second type of igneous rock is called extrusive. Extrusive rocks are formed outside of the earth. These rocks are glassy like Obsidian have vascular gas pockets like Pumice and fine-grained small crystals like the Basalt. magma is pushed to the surface from the volcano, now called lava it cools and forms an extrusive igneous rock.
How are sedimentary rocks formed?
Sedimentary rocks are formed from the compaction of sediments. Sedimentary rocks are generally formed in aquatic environments. Fossils maybe present and there might also be traces of sand, pebbles, silk, and cobbles in some sedimentary rocks.
How are metamorphic rocks formed?
Metamorphic rocks are created when existing rocks undergo intense heat and pressure. These rocks are generally formed in the lithosphere. Many metamorphic minerals have foliation which is thin layering due to mineral alignment. In addition many metamorphic rocks have banding which is a type of foliation where minerals are separated only bands.
What are the major minerals used to mark the Mohs scale?
From hardest to lowest hardness of minerals 10 - Diamond 9 - Corundum 8 - Topaz 7 - Quartz 6 - Orthoclase 5 - Aptite 4 - Fluorite 3 - Calcite 2 - Gypsum 1 - Talc
What is the definition of a geologist?
A geologist is someone who studies rocks, minerals and non - living parts of Earth.
