Other - Concepts Relating To Rocks Flashcards
What is the definition of erosion?
The movement of sediment from one place to another by water, wind or ice. When water erodes the surface it cuts into the ground forming surface channels
Some example are:
Lakes
Rivers
Hills
Canyons
- Water freezing into cracks, freezing and breaking the rocks
- Muddy water being carried away by a fast moving river
- Rain washing away soul from a hillside
- Wind blowing sand from one lactation to another
Contributions to weathering and erosion;
Farming and construction can expose rock and break apart rocks and plant roots. This makes is easier for wind and water to erode the land.
What is the definition of weathering?
Weathering is the process of breaking rocks into smaller pieces.
Some example are:
Rocks cracking or crumbling
Rocks broken by wind or water
Freezed drops of water can crack a rock
Animals burrowing under rock can break it.
- floodwater pounding against the canyon wall and wearing it down
- A mudslide flowing down a steep hill
- glacier scraping rocks across the earth surface
Contributions to weathering and erosion;
Farming and construction can expose rock and break apart rocks and plant roots. This makes is easier for wind and water to erode the land.
What is the definition of deposition?
Deposition is where pieces of rock or soul settle out of flowing water or wind as they slow down. Sediments that are left are deposited.
Here are some examples:
A delta at the mouth of a river
Floodplain
- Waves dropping sand on the beach
- Layers of sediment forming at the bottom of an ocean
- Landforms called deltas that form where rivers flow into other bodies of water such as a sea
- Glaciers that drop rock, sand and other debris forming landforms called moraines
- Wind blowing rocks together forming smaller rocks
Where does sand come from?
Sand comes from distant mountains and landforms. Wind and water also known as weathering bring the sand on to the beach after it breaks off from large pieces of rock.
What is the definition of earth processes?
Destructive:
Any process is anything that bread down earth material
Constructive:
this is a process that creates landforms
Examples:
Destructive: eroding at the side of a hill
Constructive: deltas
