Rocks Flashcards
Sedimentary rocks
Formed from the remains (sediment) of other rocks, plant life and animal life.
These sediments were deposited on the beds of sees and lakes as well as on the land
They were then compressed and cemented together
Igneous rock
Formed as a result of volcanic activity
Hot molten magma cooled down and solidified either on the surface or within the crust
Metamorphic rocks
Are those that have been changed in shape and form by great heat and pressure.
They already existed before has sedimentary rocks or igneous rocks
Granite
Formed when molten magma forces its way into the crust it
It cooled very slowly over millions of years to form large crystal that includes Quartz
Varies in colour from black or grey to pink
IT IS AN IGNEOUS ROCK
Found in Wicklow mountain
It is used as building industry
Basalt
Formed when lava spreads across the surface
IT IS AN IGNEOUS ROCK
Cooled slowly over millions of years it was exposed to the air as a result it formed tiny crystals
Varies in colour from dark grey to black
Found in Derry
The most famous section of it is in the giants causeways
Limestone
Formed on the sallow beds of warm seas from the skeletons of tiny sea creatures fish and shells that pulled up over millions of years. The particles were compressed and cemented together
Varies in colour from white to grey found in burden co Clare used to make mountains and is the raw material for cement
Sandstone
Formed when large amounts of sand is worn away from the surface of the earth transported by wind and rivers
Layers of sand built up and these were compressed and cemented together to make sandstone
Varies from brown to red
Found in the mt of Munster
Marble
When magma forces its way up into limestone it puts it under great pressure and heat this makes limestone change to marble
Pure marble is white in colour but when other material are present it varies to red green or black
Marble is hard rock that contains crystals
It is used for fireplaces gravestones
It is found is cork were it is red
Quartzite
Formed when sandstone was changed into a metamorphic rock as it came into contact with magma deep in the earths crust
Contains quarts
Varies from white to grey
Found errigal co Donegal
