Geography Flashcards
Mantle
Contains Hot molten rocks/magma 4000 degrees
Crust
Outer layer of the earth broken into a number of different plates sits on top of the mantle
Core
Divided into 2 different parts inner and outer core it is the centre of the earth made from iron and nickel it is 5,000 degrees
Magma
Soft hot molten rocks in the mantle
Plate tectonics
The theory that the earths crust is broken into a number of moving plats
Plate boundaries
Plates move at different speeds and in different directions which can cause volcanic activity and earthquakes
Destructive boundaries
When two plates crash into one another and the heavier one sinks and crust is destroyed
Constructive boundaries
When two plates seep rat and magma rises and hardens to form a volcanic island
Pangaea
The continent began has one big landmass called Pangea
Continental drift
When the plates start to move towards or away from other plates
Mid ocean ridge
An underwater mountain range is formed when two plates separate and magma arises to fill the gaps
Crater
Lava pours out If the crater at the top of the volcano
Vent
Magma reaches the surface through a vent
Magma reservoir
Hold the mantle and until it is full and then it over flows and the volcano erupts
Active
When a volcano is still able to erupt and has not gone extinct
Dormant
When a volcano has not erupted in more then 100 years
Extinct
When a volcano is not able to erupt any more
Convection currents
Magma rises from the core up to the crust then cools and sinks back down to the core so that the cycle can start over again
Fault line
The plates move along the fault line a crack on the surface after the two plates meet
Focus
The focus is the point deep in the earths crust were the earthquake begins
Tremors
The tremors spread out from the focus
Epicentre
The point directly above the focus on the surface it is the place were tremors are the strongest
Earthquakes
An earthquake is a sudden movement or trembling of the earths crust this movement takes the form of a series of shocks or tremors
Aftershock
An earthquake doesn’t last longer than a minute but smaller tremors call the aftershock may occur hours or days later they often cause more damage the the earthquake its self because the earthquake made the building weaker so the after shock may destroy it
