Rocks Flashcards
Like water, rocks are part of what?
A cycle.
What are the types of rock?
- Igneous rock 2. Sedimentary Rock 3. Metamorphic rock
Different rocks give what that is valuable to us?
Different minerals
All rocks start out as what?
Molten rock beneath the earth’s surface.
Cooled molten rock is what?
Igneous rock
All rocks come from what type?
Igneous rock
Give an example of igneous rock.
Pumice
What is igneous formed beneath earth’s crust?
Intrusive Igneous rock.
What is igneous rock that is formed above earth’s crust?
Extrusive igneous rock.
What is intrusive igneous rock like?
Large crystals, course texture.
Why is intrusive igneous rock coarse?
Crystals have a long time to form as the magma cools slowly.
What is extrusive igneous rock like?
Small crystals, fine texture.
Why does extrusive igneous rock have a fine texture?
It cools quickly, crystals do not have time to grow.
Give and example of extrusive igneous rock.
Basalt.
What metallic minerals does igneous rock contain?
Nickel, copper, gold and silver.
How is sedimentary rock formed?
Pre-existing rock is eroded which creates sediments that settle in horizontal layers. The weight of the layers and water above compress the sediment into rock.
Give and example of sedimentary rock.
Sandstone
What resources can be found in sedimentary rock?
Coal, oil, natural gas, salt, potash.
How are oil and gas formed?
The bodies of sea animals decomposed and were compressed between rock layers.
How is metamorphic rock created? What is the process called?
Other rock is subjected to heat, pressure, and certain fluids. It is called metamorphism.
Where do minerals occur?
Within rocks.
What are minerals?
Inorganic pure substances found naturally.
Are minerals stable or unstable?
Stable.
What does it take for a rock to be a rock?
It must contain 2 or more minerals.
Feeling confident?
You can do it! :D
