Q

How is basalt formed?

A

Basalt is an igneous rock. It forms when lava comes out of the volcano or fissure. The lava then cools very quickly because it is exposed to elements (water, air, wind). It then hardens and forms tiny crystal. Basalt is an extrusive rock, as it is formed on the earths surface. It is found in the Giants causeway in Co. Antrim

Q

How is limestone formed?

A

Limestones is a sedimentary rock. It formed when layers of dead plants and animals built up on the ocean floor, meaning it is organic. Over millions of years, the lower layers became compressed due to the weight of the layers above. This pressure compacted the layers and minerals like calcite acted as cement to bind the strata together. Fossils can be found in limestones. The Burren in Co. Clare is a limestone region. Limestone is used in the construction industry, mainly for making cement

Q

How is marble fomred?

A

Marble is a metamorphic rock formed when limestone undergoes changes due to intense heat and pressure. The changes from heat alone is called thermal metamorphism. Heat from magma, reaches temperature up to 2000c, altering the chemical composition of the rock k it comes in contact with. Pure marble is white, while coloured varieties result from impurities. Green marble is found in Connemara Co. Galway. Marble is commonly used as a decorative stone in kitchen countertops and bathroom tiles.

Q

What is one way humans interact with the rock cycle

A

Kitchen countertops and bathroom or kitchen floor tiles are made using materials like marble, granite and quartzite. The production and installation of these tiles create employment for tilers in the construction sector and for workers involved in manufacturing these products
