Rocks Flashcards
A solid made up of many different minerals
Rock
rocks that have been formed through the deposition of and solidification of sediment
Sedimentary rock
Formed by a volcano or the solidification of molten rock
igneous rock
Formed by extreme heat and pressure that changes the structure of the rock
Metamorphic rock
The process in which rocks are continuously transformed between the 3 rock types
Rock cycle
Mineral or organic matter carried and deposited by water or wind that may consolidate into rock (Tiny pieces of rocks or minerals)
Sediment
Breaks rocks down into sediment using: wind, ice, water,l and extreme temperatures
Weathering
The movement of small pieces of rock or sediment due to wind, water, gravity, and other natural forces
Erosion
When sediments are deposited or dropped off in a different location
Deposition
The hardening and sticking of mineral grains
Cementation
liquefied by heat
Molten
A hot, molten rock below the earth’s surface
Magma
Molten rock that erupts from the volcano. Above the earth’s surface
Lava
