Rock Formations Flashcards
What is Weathering?
Weathering is the creation of smaller pieces of rock through physical or chemical means
What is Erosion?
Erosion is the moving of sediments from their original position
What is Deposition
Deposition is the settling out of sediment
What is Compaction and Cementation?
Compaction & Cementation is the process by which sediment is squeezed and glued together to form new rock
How is an Igneous Rock Formed?
Igneous Rock is created from the cooling and solidification of magma or lava. The rock’s crystal size depends on how quickly it cools
What is the difference between magma and lava?
Magma is underground and without oxygen, and lava is above ground, and with oxygen combined into it
How is Metamorphic rock formed?
Metamorphic Rock is existing rock subjected to very high heat and pressure. This usually takes place deep underground
How is Sedimentary Rock Formed?
Sedimentary Rock is created from the deposition of sediments in layers over long periods of time. It often contains fossils.
Which rock type usually contains fossils?
Sedimentary rocks usually contain fossils. This is because there are many formed layers in sedimentary rocks, therefore they can form fossils into them overtime.
Which rock type can become which rock types?
Any rock type can become another type, given the right conditions
What is Sedimentary rock made of?
Sedimentary rock is made of loose sediments, e.x. sandstone
What is Metamorphic rock made of?
Metamorphic rock are rocks that are exposed to high enough temperatures (1700+ C) e.x. gneiss
What is Igneous rock made of?
Igneous rock is made of cooled magma from volcanoes, e.x. feldspar
