Rock Cycle Vocabulary Flashcards
The process in which rocks are continuously transformed between the 3 rock types.
Rock cycle
Mineral or organic matter carried and deposited by water or wind that may consolidate into rock. (TINY PIECES OF ROCKS OR MINERALS)
Sediment
To age or change rock as a result of being exposed to the elements: wind, ice, water, and extreme temperatures.
Weathering
The movement of small pieces or rock or sediment due to wind, water, gravity and other natural forces.
Erosion
When sediments are deposited or dropped off in a different location.
Deposition
The hardening and sticking of mineral grains.
Cementation
Liquified by heat.
Molten
A hot, molten rock below the Earths surface.
Magma
Molten rock that erupts from a volcano. Above the Earth’s surface.
Lava
A solid made up of many different minerals.
Rock
Rocks that have been formed through the deposition of and solidification of sediment.
Sedimentary rock
Formed by a volcano or the solidification of molten rock.
Igneous rock
Formed by extreme heat and pressure that changes the structure of rock.
Metamorphic rock
