Rock cycle Flashcards
Igneous Rock
Igneous rocks are the 1 out of 3 main rocks witch are metamorphic and sediment rocks. Igneous rocks are formed by the cooling and solidification of magma or aka lava.
Sedimentary Rock
Sedimentary rocks are types of rock that are formed by the accumulation or deposition of mineral or organic particles at the Earth’s surface.
Metamorphic Rock
Metamorphic rocks were once igneous or sedimentary rocks, but have been changed (metamorphosed) as a result of intense heat and/or pressure within the Earth’s crust.
Crystallization
Crystallization is the process by which a solid forms.
Lithification
Lithification is the process in which sediments compact under pressure, expel connate fluids, and gradually become solid rock.
Sediment
Sediment is a naturally occurring material that is broken down by processes of weathering and erosion.
Deposition
Deposition is the geological process in which sediments, soil and rocks are added to a land form or landmass.
Weathering
Weathering breaks down or dissolves rocks and minerals on the surface of the Earth.
Erosion
Erosion is the geological process in which earthen materials are worn away and transported by natural forces such as wind or water.
