Rock cycle Flashcards
weathering
The break down of rock in situ
Erosion
The removal of weathered material
transportation
The means by which weathered material is moved from one place to another by wind, ice or gravity
Burial
When sediment is covered by younger sediment accumulating on top of it
Recrystallization
The solid state process that changes minerals into new crystalline metamorphic minerals
partial melting
The incomplete melting of rocks in the lower crust and upper mantle
magma accumulation
Magma collecting within a magma chamber
intrusion
Igneous rock formed below the earths surface. The magma can be forced into pre-existing rocks
Diagenesis
All the changes that take place in sediments at low temperature and pressure below the earth’s surface
Extrusion
the emission of magma onto the earth’s surface where it forms a lava flow
deposition
the laying down of sediment that occurs occurs when a transporting agent loses energy
uplift
the return of buried rocks to the earth’s surface
crystallisation
it occurs during the cooling of magma or lava so that solid mineral crystals form.
metamorphism
the changing of rocks in the earth’s crust by heat and/or pressure and/ or volatile content. It is isochemical and occurs in the solid state.
pressure dissolution
occurs where minerals dissolve as the result of applied pressure
