Robinson 44 POH Section 10 Safety Tips (5/17/2024) Flashcards
Is the R44 certified for flight into known icing?
NO
Why should you always use the small plastic guard on the mixture control?
So you don’t accidentally pull the mixture control.
What steps should you take if you accidentally pull the mixture control? (3 items)
- Enter autorotation
- If sufficient altitude:
> Push mixture control in
> Attempt to restart engine with left hand - Do not disengage clutch
What is the most affective way to stop dynamic rollover?
Lower collective
How to avoid dynamic rollover?
- Always practice hovering autorotations into the wind.
- Never hover close to obstacles that the skid can catch on to
- Always use a two-step liftoff.
- Do not practice hovering maneuvers close to the ground, be at least 5 feet above the ground.
What is a two-step liftoff?
Step 1: Pull in just enough collective to be light on the skids.
Step 2: Feel for equilibrium, then gently lift the helicopter into the air.
What should you do in a low rotor situation?
Maintain RPM by adding throttle and lowering the collective.
If RPM drops 10%, how much does power drop?
10%, RPM and power are directly proportional
If you run out of fuel, what should you immediately do?
Enter an autorotation
Why is flying over water hazardous?
The pilot can easily lose depth perception
How do you avoid vortex ring state?
Never allow your airspeed to be less than 30 knots until your rate-of-descent is less than 300 feet
What are some signs of vortex ring state? (3 items)
- Increased vibration levels
- Mushy controls
- Rapid increase in sink rate
What should you do if you get into vortex ring state?
- Reduce collective pitch
- Lower the nose to fly forward
- At the first sign of airspeed, apply recovery power
How can you reduce the chances of a passenger walking into a tail rotor?
- Maintain eye contact
- Always have strobe light flashing when rotors are turning
- Be especially careful when landing off airport
What is the maximum belt slack tension?
1.5 inches
