Why was the houses built?
To overcome Post WW2 housing crisis and cope with baby boom, immigration, army return and family breakdowns.
What was the inspiration behind the houses?
Brutalism -> walkways in the sky, different to tower blocks
What are the negatives of the current housing?
Over 800 crimes reported around postcode, 67% not working, 82% renting, 63% semi skilled, 34% have 5 or more in a 2 bedroom flat
What are the positives of the housing?
Strong community
Faciltiies -> primary school, gardens
Story behind it and used to be known as posh architectural masterpiece (some still see as beautiful)
What are the negatives of the housing?
Anti social behaviour Looks deprived Stuck in lifts Rubbish Poor design Lots of leaks (poor QoL)
What are the plans for the new development?
£500 mil. 1600 new homes Improvement to primary school Still tower blocks claim to be 'affordable housing' available
What has caused the failure of the scheme?
Outdated
Residents are minority as most rent so don’t care about the place
Lack of council input
Only works if upgrade but pushing residents elsewhere spreading problem
