Robert Koch and Louis Pasteur Flashcards
1
Q
What is spontaneous generation?
A
A theory that hpyothesised that living organisms spontanteously grew out of non living things
* maggots in meat
2
Q
Who estabillished he ‘‘Germ theory of disease?
A
Louis Pasteur
3
Q
What is the germ theory of disease?
A
infectious diseases are caused by the invasion of the body by microorganisms
4
Q
What is pasteurisation?
A
The process of heating a liquid to destroy any diseasing causing microbes
* milk, wine
5
Q
What was Robert Koch’s contributions to the field of microbiology?
A
- development of Koch’s postulates
- identifed the bacterium that causes several infectious diseases such as anthrax, tuberculosis, chloera
- developed the agar plate technique for isolating and growing bacteria
6
Q
What is Koch’s postulates?
A
- a set of criteria to deteminr whether a microbe is responsible for causing a disease
1. The same microorganism must be present in every diseased host
2. microbe must be isolated from host and grown in pure culture
3. When inoculated in a healthy host, the pathogen produced in pure culture must cause the disease in the host
4. pathogen must be isolated from second host and cultured and identified to be the original pathogen
7
Q
What was Pasteur’s work with fermentation?
A
- he noticed yeast was converting sugars into alcohol
- discovered that bacteria was responsible for the souring of milk by converting sugars into lactic acid
- developed a process called pasteurisation
8
Q
Why was Pasteur’s work important in the development of microbiology and our understanding of infectious diseases?
A
- fermentation was due to microbes
- microbes are responsible for many of the processes that were previously thought to be chemical reactions
- helped discover the link between infectious diseases and microbes
