Stage 1 of robbery
The D must have committed a theft (Robinson)
Stage 2 of robbery
The defendant must use force or the threat of force
Main case of stage 2 also side rules
Main case : Dawson any amount of force is enough
Side rule 1 indirect force - force can be applied to victims clothes/bag(clouden)
Side rule 2 threats of force - victim does not actually have to be in fear it is enough that D seeks to put victim in fear (B and R V DPP
Stage 3
Force must be used immediately before or at the time of the theft (hale) - appropriation is a continuing act so as long as force takes place at some point this is enough
Stage 4
Force must be used in oder to steal (lockley)
Means rea 1
The men’s rea of theft must be establishes dishonesty and intention to permenantly deprive
Means rea for robbery
Is the intention to use force or the threat of force (mohan)
