Roatary Vane Pump Flashcards
Purpose of rotary vane pump
It’s a positive displacement pump for pumping all kinds of fluids on ships.
-also used for gasoline or low viscosity fluids where a high suction lift is required
What pumps are rotary vane pumps
Transfer pump
Stripping pump
Defuel pump
Auxiliary pump
Transfer pump does what
Stowage to stowage tanks ..
Stowage to service tanks via purifier
Stripping pump does what
Removes sludge and water that settle at bottom of tank .
- 2 pumps installed in both forward and aft systems
- 1 in cargo
Defuel pump does what
Used to return aircraft defueling or refueling or hose flushing fuel back to stowage tanks.
- one pump installed per fuel station
Auxiliary pump used for what
Transfers fuel form service tanks to EDGs, small boat stations , and tractor filling stations
Components and functions of rotary vane pumps
4 components
- cylinder body
- head assemblies
- rotor and shaft assembly
- pressure control valve
Cylinder
Houses the rotor assembly and pressure control valve
- has openings for suction and discharge piping connections
- machines to form an oval shaped cylinder bore
Head assemblies
- acts as end covers for cylinder bore enclosure
- houses the ball bearings and mechanical seal assembly
Ball bearings
Located in bearing housing within cylinder head
- supports the rotor and shaft assembly
- maintains clearance between outside diameter of the rotor and cylinder bore
- bearing covers are equipped with grease fitting
Mechanical seal
- prevents leakage of fuel align the shaft and into the bearing housing
- 2 seals installed on each end of shaft
- an O ring acts as a seal between the heads and the cylinder
Rotor and shaft assembly
- rotates within the cylinder to move JP5 from the suction flange to the discharge flange
- it contains recesses which houses 6 vanes and 3 pushrods. They made of polymite
- vanes have relief grooves , which face direction of rotation. And it allows JP5 behind vane to escape and be directed to the discharge
Vanes
Maintain sliding contact with cylinder bore by pushrods and centrifugal force
Pushrods
They slide back and forth through the holes in shaft and rotor. They make contact with vanes at each end
Why is the rotor keyed to shaft
To ensure rotation with the shaft
