Purifier Flashcards
Purpose of the centrifugal purifier
Separate and remove water, solids, and emulsions from JP5 during stowage to service tank transfers
What kind of purifier is it AKA?
A constant-efficiency type of separator. Same degree of efficiency at the end of a run as at the beginning
Define centrifugal force ?
A force which impels a thing outward from a center of rotation
Components of a purifier ?
x23 components
- frame
- brake
- speed indicator
- oil fill cap
- worm wheel and drive assembly
- spindle assembly

- A/C motor and controller
Frame
It’s bolted to base plate and secured purifier to ship foundation.
- it houses all the drive components
Brake
- Used to stop bowl rotation , emergency use only
- hand operated.
- handle up - brakes on
- handle down - brakes off
- brakes must be off prior to purifier operation
- brake drum is attached to drive assembly
Speed indicator
- used to determine rotations per minute .
- button on cap provides a speed count
- operating speed for purifier in 146-152 BPM. Bumps per minute
Some ships use 200 GPM purifier , what should be BPM
146-150 BPM
Oil fill cap
Use to add oil.
- has a dipstick in center to determine level
Oil sight glass
- has a retaining ring and clear glass for viewing oil level
- white line for high oil level
- red line for low oil level
- oil reservoir holds 8-8 1/2 quarts of grade 90 gear oil.
Worm wheel and drive assembly
- Connects the purifier to the motor shaft by a flexible coupling
- horizontal drive shaft is supported by 2 ball bearings ( outer and inner )
Worm wheel is keyed to the drive shaft and engages the worm quill at the bottom of spindle assembly to provide what?
Provide the drive rotation to the spindle
A smaller gear of worm wheel gear assembly is used to drive what?
Drive the speed counter
How is the worm wheel and drive assembly lubricated ?
By splash action in the oil reservoir
Where is the worm wheel and drive assembly located?
Within the frame
Spindle assembly
Provides drive rotation to the bowl assembly
Spindle assembly consists of what?
Consist of a shaft with an attached worm quill that meshes with the worm wheel
Spindle assembly supported by how many bearings?
Upper bearings (2) Upper/lower bearings (2) Lower bearings (2)
Bowl casing
Bolted at the top of the frame , and houses the rotating bowl shell assembly
Bowl casing has a ratchet hook that what?
Locks the bowl in an open position for service and inspection
Bowl casing drain line extends where ?
From the bottom of the bowl casing
Bowl casing has how many bowl shell lock screws and how many bowl shell plugs?
2 each
What are the bowl shell lock screws and bowl shell plugs do?
They help disassemble of the bowl shell assembly
Bowl shell screws must be removed and plugs installed prior to what?
Prior to operation
How many bowl cover clamps lock the bowl cover to the casing ?
3 cover clamps
O rings do what
Provide a seal between the casing and bowl cover .
How many O rings are there ?
2
How many inlet and outlet connections?
2 -With flanges and connections to piping
The housing of the inlet and outlet connections serve as what?
They serve as a hinge pin for the bowl cover .
Bowl cover provides what?
It provides a sealed enclosure over the top of the bowl casing as the purifier is in operation.
The bowl cover covers what?
The rotating assembly
Hinges on the bowl casing, when in the open position , the cover is what?
Automatically locked in place by the locking hook
The bowl cover houses what?
The inlet and outlet lines . And are flexible
