Why were the 1920s nicknamed the ‘Roaring Twenties’?
The 1920s were a time of greatn social and cultural change
What form of music became popular? Where did it originate?
Jazz- Originated in Southern states but spread north as African- Americans moved in search of work.
What were people’s opinions on Jazz?
Jazz appealed to the young because of it’s fast tempos and lively rhythms. The older generation felt it encouraged drunkenness and the dances were too sexual
How did the cinema industry grow during the 20s?
Weekly audiences grew from 35 million in 1919 -> 100 million in 1930
What was the ‘star system’?
Studios promoted main actors by making sure the media had full access to the stars.
What were talkies?
Films with sound
What was the Hay’s Code
A list of strict rules which included a ban on nudity and strict restrictions on the portrayal of crime
How did sport become more popular?
Radio broadcasts, newspapers and magazines promoted sporting events to a mass audience. Sports people such as Babe Ruth became celebrities
What were women’s lives like before the war?
Most women led restricted lives,couldn’t vote and were controlled by their husband. Women were expected to display feminine characteristics and mannerisms.
How did the war change lives for women?
Women took over the jobs of men who went away to fight. They gained independence and were given the vote. By 1929, 10.5 million women were employed- 25% more than in 1920
What was a flapper?
A flapper was an independent, young, fashionable woman. They were mainly middle/upper- class women.
Why did some people not like flappers?
Their liberal attitude shocked traditional members of society who felt religious and traditional values were under threat. An Ant-Flirt League was formed to protest against their behaviour.
Did life change for all women?
In rural areas, women still worked and raised their families. Despite gaining the vote, women were still not equal to men and many worked in low-skilled jobs earning less than men
