25
Q

What would be a good argument about how Columbus was a greedy conqueror?

A

A good argument:

Columbus was a greedy conqueror. When Columbus reached the Americas, he showed no respect toward the natives, instead, he decided to enslave them. To elaborate, he slaughtered the indigenous people. Since his main conquest was to find gold, he decided to make the enslaved people mine for gold, however, if you did not present enough gold to Columbos, he would torture you. Yes, he did inspire other Europeans to come to the Americas, but the bad outweigh the good.

or

Columbus was a brave hero. He wanted to leave Spain to find a new trade route to India. This shows his braveness and integrity, for he explored the mysterious ocean. Moreover, he had the intention to claim land for Spain, as well as, spread the Catholic religion. After he came to the Americas he inspired others around Europe to go to the Americas. Others may think he was a greedy conqueror because of how he treated the Natives. Still, when you look further into Columbus’s perspective, slavery was, unfortunately, a common thing that happened around the road. Given that point, this could have led to Columbus thinking since other rulers do it, why can’t he?

26
Q

When was the Columbian Exchange from?

A

1490s and onward.

27
Q

What are some ideas given through the Columbian Exchange?

A
  • Christianity,
  • Tribal customs or traditions from Africans
28
Q

How are some ways English and Powhaton communicated?

A

They would gift adolescent boys to learn culture and language, or kidnap people.

29
Q

What would be a good example of an agreement for Pocahontas to not save John Smith?

A

Pocahontas did not save John Smith from her tribesmen. This is because all of the sources written by John Smith, state that he was saved. This was only for publicity, for he wanted to raise more wealth for himself and Pocahontas. Moreover, this was just an adoption ceremony, adherents believe that Smith’s life was never in danger. Why else would John be welcomed into the tribe? John’s motive to write about Pocahontas was to promote the settlement in Virginia. This changes the view completely, for he is just doing all of this for wealth.

30
Q

What happened to the Roanoke? Make your argument good with evidence!! (Yours might not match the one on the answer key)

A

The English settlers did go to the island of Croaton from Roanoke. We can infer this because whe John White saw the “CRO” markings on the tree, this meant the English settlers were going to Croaton Island. This was a form of communicaiton back then. Adding on, when John White came to the Islands, he wrote that the ships were missing. This could be evidence towards the settlers moving to the Croaton. Also since there was a Croaton tribe, this could mean that the settlers decided to join the tribe.
