Britain had gone deeply into debt during the French and Indian war. It was also expensive to keep British troops in North America to defend settlements. Britain also argued that colonists should pay taxes to pay for those debts. Colonists say that they are separate from Britain and argued that that should not be taxed especially since they had had no representation in parliament.
