Road to Revolution Flashcards
Peace Party
Ally with Mexican federalists to get them back into power of the Mexican government. (No independence)
War Party
Wanted immediate independence from Mexico.
Battle of Gonzales
The first battle of the revolution!! Called the Lexington of Texans, this is where the “Come and Take it” flag came from. Mexico wanted to confiscate all weapons but the Texians refused and fired a cannon after saying, “Come and Take it!”
Consultation of 1835
A convention was set up to answer the question, of whether they wanted independence from Mexico or not. The war party wanted immediate independence from Mexico, and the peace party wanted to ally with Mexican federalists to get them back into power; they did not seek independence. They declared their support for the Constitution of 1824, stated they were loyal to Mexico, and they blamed Santa Anna for the fighting; concluding that they would side with the intentions of the peace party.
Army of the People
An Army made in confidence due to the wins at Goliad and Gonzales. Commanded by Stephan F. Austin.
Grass Fight
“Deaf” Smith informed the Texians that they were smuggling goods into the fort. When the Texians went to see what goods they were smuggling, all they found was grass; meaning that the siege of Bexar had worked.
Battle of San Antonio
Ben Milam had encouraged the fight, but he didn’t command it; Sam Houston did. Battle lasted 4 days and only two Texians died. (Including Ben Milam…) General Cos had promised that he would leave the Constitution of 1824 and Texas alone.
The provisional government
Both the Governor (Henry Smith) and the Lt. Governor (James Robinson) were in support of the war party, but the general council had various people who supported the peace party, which caused a lot of clashing in beliefs. Therefore, an ineffective government.
Convention of 1836
Declare independence from Mexico and establish a government. They wrote the Declaration of Independence and the Texas Constitution here. The documents written were inspired by the U.S.
March 2nd 1836
