Road Crash Rescue Flashcards
Name the 8 stages of vehicle rescue operations.
PRIGEDRT
1. Preparation
2. Response
3. Incident Management
4. Gaining Access
5. Emergency Care
6. Disentanglement
7. Removal and Transfer
8. Termination
When isolating a battery, do you isolate the positive or negative terminal first, to avoid sparking?
Negative
What actions by a rescuer can trigger the deployment of a Supplementary Restraint System (SRS) device?
- Reconnecting the battery
- Accidental cutting of a SRS device
- Accidental cutting of SRS cabling
a) What are 4 likely regions of a car where SRS devices could be located?
b) SRS cables are what colour?
a) 1. Steering wheel
2. Passenger side dashboard
3. Lumbar / seats
4. Vehicle pillars (curtain airbags and/or seatbelt pre-tensioners)
b) Yellow
What term describes the process of looking behind trim, etc. for hazards, prior to cutting into it?
Peel and peek
What is the rule for staying clear of non-deployed airbags?
30, 60, 90 rule;
- 30cm away from lumbar/seat airbags
- 60cm away from steering wheel airbag
- 90cm away from passenger dashboard airbag
NOTE: Attach a yellow warning sticker to the device
What precautions must be taken when a non-deployed air-bag is encountered during a rescue?
- Inform OIC and other rescuers of the risk
- Remember the 30/60/90 rule and remain out of the deployment pathway
- Attach a yellow warning sticker to the device
- Ensure vehicle is turned off and remove key (keep proximity keys at least 5m away from vehicle)
- Isolate the battery (negative first and communicate this to all rescuers once done)
- Ensure you peel and peek before any cutting or spreading
How are “Hybrid” cables identified?
Thick and orange in colour and usually running the length of the vehicle from the battery pack to the engine.
a) What are the 2 stages of stabilisation?
b) What are the 2 common methods of stabilisation?
a) 1. Primary
2. Secondary
b) 1. 3-point stabilisation
2. 4-point stabilisation
Who is the Hazard Management Agency (HMA) for a road crash and what other “supporting agencies” may be in attendance?
HMA;
- WAPOL
Supporting agencies;
- DFES
- St John
- Western Power
- ATCO Gas
- Main Roads
Identify the procedures for isolating a hybrid vehicle.
- Turn off ignition, remove keys to at least 5M away
- Ensure park brake is on, press start/stop engine button (ensure off)
- Locate battery and disconnect the negative terminal
- Pull fuses
- Locate and remove the high voltage service plug and pull apart or operate the isolation switch
What are the 3 principle methods for gaining access to casualties trapped in vehicle?
- Via a door
- Via a window
- Via the removal of part or section of the vehicle
What are the 2 main types of vehicle construction?
- Cab-on-chassis
- Monocoque
Name the 6 components of the hydraulic rescue set.
- Cutter
- Spreader
- Ram
- Power pack
- Hoses
- Chain set
What types of metal should not be cut with DFES hydraulic cutters?
Hardened steel
