RNA Processing Flashcards
1
Q
Three Major Classes of RNA Modifications
A
*Single base modifications: pseudouridine
*Cleavage reactions: cutting RNA to smaller segments
*Joining reactions: covalently connecting two RNA segments together.

Q
What is a primary transcript?
A
RNA molecule prior to processing and maturation.

Q
Prokaryotic vs. Eukaryotic Transcription
A
-LOCATION: Prokaryotic transcription occurs in the cytoplasm; eukaryotic transcription occurs in the nucleus.
- RNA POLYMERASE: Prokaryotes have a single RNA Polymerase that transcribes all types of RNA. Eukaryotes have three types of RNA polymerase that transcribe different types of RNA.
-PROCESSING: Prokaryotic (bacterial) mRNA molecules are not processed prior to use. Eukaryotic mRNA molecules undergo extensive processing prior to use such as capping, splicing, and tailing.
