RNA Flashcards
1
Q
Where is RNA made? What is it made by?
A
- RNA is made in the nucleus by DNA
2
Q
What does RNA stand for?
A
Ribonucleic acid
3
Q
What is RNA involved in?
A
- protein synthesis
4
Q
What is the structure of RNA?
A
- RNA is also a polymer made up of nucleotides, but it differs in structure from DNA
5
Q
How does RNA differ in structure from DNA?
A
- it consists of a single strand
- the strand is much shorter than that of DNA
- the sugar is ribose, NOT deoxyribose
- it has 3 bases in common with DNA, but a base called uracil replaces thymine
6
Q
What is the function of RNA?
A
- carries instructions from DNA in the nucleus to the ribosomes in the cytoplasm of a cell
-> where it controls the synthesis of proteins from amino acids
7
Q
What are the similarities between DNA and RNA?
A
- DNA and RNA are both made up of:
- polymers
- nucleotides that are made up of a sugar (ribose), phosphate and nitrogen base
- 4 nitrogenous bases - They are both responsible for the synthesis of proteins
