Types of observations
Overt/Covert
Naturalistic/Controlled
Participant/Non-participant
Observation
Watching the behaviour of participants and recording when operationalised events happen
Participant observation
The observer joins in with the group being watched
Non participant observation
The observer stays separate from the group being observed
Naturalistic observation
Take place in a the participants normal environment
Controlled observations
Take place where variables are controlled by the researcher
Covert observation
Undisclosed to the participant
Overt observation
Disclosed to the participant
Strength of naturalistic observation
High ecological validity
Strength of controlled observation
High replicability / test-retest reliability
Strength of participant observation
Higher validity as gains more inside information
Strength of non participant observation
More detached so less chance of researcher bias
Strength of covert observation
Lower risk of demand characteristics
Strength of overt observation
More ethical (especially concerning consent)
Behavioural categories
Target behaviours broken down into observable actions to make it more standardised with multiple observers
Time sampling
Observations made at regular intervals
Event sampling
Keeping a tally of each time a behaviour occurs over a longer period of time.
Self report techniques
Where a participant gives information about their thoughts, feelings and opinions to a researcher (questionnaires or interviews)
Questionnaires
Participants are given a set of written questions and respond themselves
Open questions
Participants are free to answer any way they wish
Produces qualitative data
Closed questions
There are a fixed number of responses that the participant must choose from
Produces quantitative data
Things to avoid in questionnaire writing
Specific jargon
Double barrelled questions
Leading questions
Questionnaire evaluation
✅Easily replicable
✅Anonymous
❌Lacks detail
❌No rapport with participant can decrease validity
