Consent, protection from harm, deception, confidentiality, withdrawal, observations

Explain consent, and how it can be dealt with (Ethics)
A
- Researchers should informal all participants of the aims of the research
- Participants should give consent:
- Presumptive consent - Similar group of people are asked about if the experiment is acceptable
- Prior general consent - Participants consent to many studies, one involving deception
- Retrospective consent - Participants are asked consent after the study

- Must not be placed at any more risk than daily life
- Debrief the participants, and offer counselling

A
- Deliberately misleading or withholding information
- Researchers must debrief the participants before they leave

Explain confidentiality, and how it can be dealt with (Ethics)
A
- Participants, and the data they provided should be anonymous unless full consent is given
- Participants’ names must not be revealed

A
- Researchers must make it clear that participants can withdraw at any point
- Also can withdraw their data given
- Make withdrawal clear
- Participants must begiven opportunity to withdraw their data that has been collected

- Researchers must only observe participant’s in environments people would expect to be observed
- Complete observations in environments people would expect to be observed by strangers
